President's Letter
Spring 2010
Our board recently lost a long time friend and colleague, Brent Miller. When it came to his contributions to ACDA, Brent epitomized the word “service”. He served two terms as president of NJ-ACDA (1991-1993 and 1997-1999), and also served as the Eastern Division President from 2006-2008. He was passionate about the Elementary/Junior High festival hosted by NJ-ACDA and NJMEA, serving as coordinator for many years. He could also give you a million reasons why you should attend the conferences and was a walking information brochure on each of them. I can’t remember a conference where I did not see Brent. You could count on seeing him at NJMEA sitting at the NJACDA table in the exhibits giving out those great MARK YOUR SCORE pencils!
Active in church music for over 50 years and music education for 38 years, Brent was dedicated to the choral art. He saw ACDA as a way to further that connection with choral music and his fellow colleagues. He believed in the mission of ACDA so much that he spent much of his life giving back to this wonderful organization.
Brent’s memory will live on in members who like him, believe in what ACDA has to offer and are willing to go the extra mile. In every organization, there are usually a handful of members who assume most of the workload. I would like to extend an invitation to those of you who would like to contribute something whether large or small. Maybe you are really proficient in an area that could be used to enhance our NJ-ACDA events –whether it be accompanying, computer skills, videography/ photography, organizing coffee service/meals, advertising, etc…your contribution would be appreciated! We are all about the business of making music. Let me re-phrase that – the “busy-ness” of making music! However, this is a time for you to become a little more involved in your choral organization and reap the rewards. I know one of the greatest rewards I have enjoyed as a president is the opportunity to network with my choral colleagues and make personal connections. I value the camaraderie that choral directors have and the conversations we share concerning everything from repertoire ideas to tour companies.
I fell in love with ACDA at the national conference held in Chicago years ago after experiencing the amazing conductors and choirs. It inspired me to not only become a lifetime member, but also motivated me to get my masters degree. I left with so many wonderful repertoire and teaching ideas. My students benefit every time I attend an ACDA conference. I hope YOU were at the Eastern Division conference in Philadelphia. So many fabulous experiences awaited you!
While in Philly, I went to a Thai restaurant (Brent’s favorite) for dinner with my fellow board members and raised a toast to Brent. To Brent Forrest Miller, thank you for the tireless work you gave to ACDA. We will miss you. Know that your work will be carried on for years to come, and we are inspired by the dedication you showed.
